Simon Says…

There have been many times in my short 23 year life that I have found myself playing the famous Simon Says. All of us know how to play the game, as the rules are very simple, but not all of us are good at this game. I am one who has no coordination and am completely unable to play a successful round. I can usually make it only a minute or two into the game before I realize I am still moving when everyone else is standing still. Yeah, I am that guy! I have naively thought that as I continue to grow up I will become more coordinated, thus giving me a little bit more of an edge in order to compete, but sadly I still find myself out rather quickly. I am undecided on whether or not I lose because I am terribly uncoordinated or because I am a terrible listener. I am sure it has a little to do with both.

This game of Simon Says applies very much to our faith lives, instead it should appropriately be called Christ Says. Yes, we as Christians are called to act as Christ acted. If you find the game of Simon Says hard and challenging, I am sure that acting as Christ did is even more challenging. It really is no easy task. In life, we try and follow what Christ has called us to, and many times we find ourselves doing the right thing. When I am playing Simon Says, I usually end up messing up as soon as I become too confident in my ability to win the game. The same applies in life, as soon as we become too prideful in ourselves, and no longer follow the leader (Christ) we will fall. We must be careful of not becoming too prideful. Have confidence in yourself while always trusting in Christ, always keeping your eyes looking toward Christ and your ears tuned to the sound of his voice. We cannot expect perfection, but we certainly can expect that even when we do fall, and are no longer looking at Christ or listening to him, we always have his forgiveness. Always seek Christ and when we fall, run to the Sacrament of Reconciliation - Christ is always showing you the way.

I leave you with St. Paul's words of encouragement to St. Timothy, "Pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witness." 1 Timothy 6:11-12

Pray daily, read Scripture often, love always.
